The Difference Between Synthetic and Natural Progesterone

By Cathryn Clifton

Lets first give you some information to make you question natural versus synthetic.

Here is one real eye opener. Premarin is synthetic estrogen.

So what? You ask...What difference does it make?

Premarin is derived from pregnant mares urine! What is really disturbing and sad is how they obtain that urine.

The pregnant horse is kept in a tiny stall just big enough to stand up in, not move or lay down in. There are 75,000 to 80, 000 pregnant mares kept for urine production.

These mares are kept in these tiny stalls for 11 months, on restricted fluid intake, given no exercise, and kept this way.  They are not allowed to pasture with their foals and then recycled into the program again.  This is not necessary at all!

Many women who start taking these synthetic hormones, find the side effects so unpleasant, that they stop taking the hormone treatment program altogether.

In the last issue of the ezine we talked about the problems that using estrogen alone can cause. One of the main ones being that it increases the risk for breast cancer by as muchas 30 per cent and other kinds of female cancers as well.

Estrogen incourages fluid retention and fat gain around the hips and thighs.

To talk about natural progesterone therapy  and it's role - we must completely explain this main point:

The Difference Between Synthetic and Natural Progesterone

This is one of the most important factors you must educate yourself on before you go on any kind of replacement hormone program. Many doctors do NOT know the difference between natural and synthetic  and are  not educated on this subject.

Synthetic progesterone and natural progesterone are NOT the same thing!!!!

Synthetic progestins are NOT exact replicas of the body's own natural progesterone. There are many  side effects with synthetic progestins that women are not made fully aware of by their doctor.

Synthetic progesterone comes in the name of Provera, Duphaston, Primulut, Depo-Provera, and Norplant.

Side effects include: headaches, fluid retention, breast tenderness, liver imbalances, insomnia, increased risk of birth defects and early abortion, weight changes, hirsutism (excessive hair growth),pulmonary embolism, and PMS like symptoms.

Synthetic progestins tend to inhibit the body's production of its own natural progesterone which is needed to maintain many healthy functions. Look these names  up in a Physicians Desk Reference.

The Physician's Desk Reference contains the  labeling , dosages, administation, and side effects for most of the drugs sold in the US. Read for yourself  the listed side effects for yourself. It is something every person should do no matter what drug they are on.

Natural Progesterone on the other hand is not known to have any negative side effects or toxic levels.

What benefits does natural progesterone give to you?

It is the PRECUSOR to the other sex hormones (estrogen and testosterone and cortisone). If your progesterone level is adequate....you will have balanced estrogen levels.

Natural progesterone maintains the lining of the uterus, promotes the survival of the embryo and fetus throughout the pregnancy,  protects against fibrocystic breasts, natural diuretic, promotes fat burning for energy, natural anti- depressant, aids the production of the thyroid hormone, normalizes  blood clotting, helps maintain the sex drive, helps keep blood sugar levels normal, normalized zinc and copper levels, promotes proper cell oxygen levels, protects AGAINST endometrial cancer, helps PREVENT breast cancer, promotes blood building, and protects against osteoporosis.

Natural Progesterone Therapy

Your Information Source for Natural Progesterone, Hormone Balance and Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy

Over a decade ago, Dr. John Lee first published his startling conclusions about conventional hormone replacement therapy (HRT): synthetic hormones don’t work as predicted and, worse, they pose a health threat to women. His findings touched off a storm of controversy. But years later, research has proved him right. Now millions of women concerned about aging are looking for alternatives to HRT, and finding them in natural hormones, and Dr. Lee’s effective, commonsense approach to restoring hormone balance.

Although Dr. Lee died in October 2003, his work lives on in his best-selling books, his audio and video tapes, and on this website, where you’ll find a wealth of information about natural hormones, from “Frequently Asked Questions” for beginners, to biochemistry for experts.
