  Rosemary Essential Oil

rosemary herb

How to Grow and Use It!

A symbol of friendship, loyalty, and remembrance, rosemary is traditionally carried by mourners at funerals and by the bride at her wedding. Greek scholars wore garlands of rosemary when they were sitting examinations, to improve their memory and concentration.

In the 14th century Queen Izabella of Hungary claimed that, at the age of 72 years, when crippled with gout and rheumatism, she had so regained her strength and beauty by using Hungary water (rosemary tops macerated in alcohol) that the King of Poland proposed to her.

Queen Izabella of Hungary also exclaimed, rosemary is also an indispensable beauty aid. When used in facials it is cleansing and boosts the circulation. It is also a very versatile hair care herb for people with dark hair. It restores lustre, revitalizes the hair and stimulate hair growth. It is also one of the best remedies for dandruff.

You can make an apple cider rinse by steeping about 125ml freshly bruised rosemary leaves in 750ml vinegar for two weeks. Add about 100ml to your final rinse. You can also make your own rosemary shampoo.

Use a good baby shampoo as a base and add 1 part strong rosemary infusion. Use as you would your normal shampoo.

In Hamlet, Ophelia gives Hamlet a sprig, saying, "There's rosemary ... for remembrance."

What is Rosemary Used For?

Traditionally rosemary is used with lamb, but it also tastes good in scones, breads and biscuits as well as with chicken and fish.

It combines well with oranges and is used in soups and vegetable dishes as well as drinks, jelly, mustard, flavoured oils and vinegars, and preserves.

Rosemary can easily overpower a dish, so start with small quantities - 1/2 teaspoon freshly bruised leaves per four portions. It also stands up well to looking periods and can thus be added at the beginning of the cooking period.

Rosemary's preservative powers compares favourably with the commercial food preservatives BHA and BHT. It might help prevent food poisoning on your next picnic. Mix the crushed leaves generously into hamburger meat and tuna, pasta, and potato salads.

It also inhibit the action of many micro-organisms that can cause infection. For minor cuts in the garden, press some fresh, crushed rosemary leaves into the wound on the way to the wash and bandage it.

Like most culinary herbs, rosemary may help relax the smooth muscle lining the digestive tract, an action that makes it an antispasmodic, and a very effective treatment for indigestion. Simply adding it to your dishes will work magic.

Rosemary may also help relieve nasal and chest congestion caused by colds, flu, and allergies, and it is widely used to help relieve the symptoms of asthma.

But by far the most important health benefit of the 'modern' rosemary is the fact that she is one of our richer sources of antioxidants. And antioxidants help to prevent cancer. Drink it as a tea and/or include fresh rosemary in your cooking.

For a pleasantly aromatic infusion to settle the stomach or clear a stuffy nose, simply steep 1 to 2 teaspoons freshly bruised rosemary leaves in a cup of boiling water for 10 to 15 minutes. Drink three cups a day. As a home-made tincture use 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon up to three times a day. When using commercial preparations, follow the package directions. You may give dilute rosemary preparations to children under age two.

Rosmarinus officinalis The essential oil of Rosemary is steam distilled from the flowering tops and leaves of the herb. The essence is herbaceous and sweet.

Refreshing and stimulating, this oil helps to clear the mind and strengthen the memory. It is excellent for use in the diffuser to alleviate mental and physical fatigue.

When used in massage, the penetrating actions of Rosemary are beneficial in the treatment of muscular pain and arthritic conditions. Its toning-properties and ability to simulate blood flow, expel toxins and improve the digestion of fats makes it useful for the treatment of cellulite.

Rosemary is also a common additive to many commercial hair care preparations because it simulates the scalp and revives dull and lifeless hair.

PROPERTIES: Digestive aid, circulatory stimulant, aid to memory, concentration and mental alertness, detoxifying agent.

BLENDS WELL WITH: Lavender, Lemon, Orange, Grapefruit, Peppermint.

PRECAUTIONS: Avoid use of Rosemary if you are pregnant or suffer from high blood pressure or epilepsy.

For a stimulating scalp massage: Blend four drops Rosemary oil wit ½ oz. base oil. Massage mixture into the scalp with circular movements. Rinse and shampoo. For an invigorating bath:

A morning bath with eight drops Rosemary in /2 oz. bath base oil will help to awaken the senses and tone the body.

For improving concentration: Add ten drops Rosemary to an essential oil burner or lamp ring diffuser. For a pain relieving massage:

To relieve pain and assist in detoxification of the body, add ten drops Rosemary to one oz. unscented massage oil.

 Growing Rosemary Plants

Growing Rosemary in Warm Climates (USDA Zones 8 Through 10)

Steps:
1.  Buy started plants at the nursery for best results; seeds germinate slowly and erratically - and then only when they're very fresh.

2.  Choose a site that gets full sun or very light afternoon shade and has excellent drainage (raised beds are ideal). Rosemary prefers poor to average soil with a pH of 6.5 to 7.0. (Image 1)

3.  Plant at any time, setting transplants into the ground at the same depth they were growing in their nursery pots. Leave at least 2 feet all around to ensure good air circulation. (Image 2)

4.  Clip leaves or sprigs anytime you need them. (Image 3)

Tips:
Plant rosemary where you intend it to stay; it resents being moved.

For the best selection - and to be sure of what you're getting - buy rosemary plants from an herb specialist. Large, general-interest garden centers often don't label specific varieties, which come in several foliage forms and bear flowers of either white, pink, deep blue or light blue.

Rosemary repels cabbage moths and bean beetles.

Growing Rosemary in Cooler Climates (USDA Zone 7 and North)

Steps:
1.  Buy started plants at the nursery for planting in early spring.

2.  Use a clay pot that measures at least 12 inches deep and 12 inches across and has plenty of drainage holes.

3.  Fill it with a light, coarse potting mix, such as cactus soil with a handful of perlite added. Set the plants into their new quarters at the same depth they were growing in their nursery pots.

4.  Harden off plants when all danger of frost has passed, then move them outdoors (see "How to Harden Off Seedlings").

5.  Water regularly, keeping the soil slightly moist but never wet. During spring and early summer, feed plants monthly with compost tea.

6.  Bring the plants back inside well before the first frost and put them in a sunny south- or west-facing window. If winter sunlight is scarce in your house, augment the supply with fluorescent lights.

7.  Keep the soil moist and mist the plants at least twice a week with tepid water.

8.  Clip leaves or sprigs anytime you need them.

Tips from eHow Users:
When and were to grow rosemary
The type of rosemary does effect when you grow it. Rosemary is a rather hardy plant and can probably be grown any time of year. But to get the best out of your rosemary, try planting between March and June, in a relatively sunny, but sheltered spot. Your rosemary should thrive!
