Vaccinations and Their Warnings (Research This Whole site) link above before you make your decision!

I might add the new flu vaccine this year does still contain Mercury? Why when they already know its effects and that it is dangerous!

Fighting the flu: To get a shot or not

This article has both the standard medical view and  a small bit on the alternative view as well. For a complete view of the vaccination issue and the warnings- side effects  click on the above link.

This article naturally is slanted toward pushing flu shots.  Again Research all the links found at the page in blue above. I personally don't believe in them and don't get them. I rely on vitamins and herbs such as Oregano, Garlic, and Goldenseal. I implore you to read both sides and then make a decision!

October 9, 2005

SUMMIT COUNTY - Last fall, clinics ran out of flu vaccines for the general public. The shortage followed the 2003-2004 flu season, when Colorado made national headlines with an increased death rate from the illness.

This year, to make sure people at the highest risk for serious flu complications get vaccinated, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is asking clinics to vaccinate the at-risk groups in the next six weeks and wait to offer flu shots to the general public until Monday, Oct. 24. Healthy people age 5-50 can get a FluMist nasal spray vaccine anytime.

High Country Health Care received its first batch of vaccinations last week and will receive the bulk of them Wednesday. Summit Medical Center will get its vaccinations this week as well.

"Everyone would benefit from an annual influenza vaccination, but for many people, influenza vaccination is critical," said Dr. Julie Gerberding, director of the CDC.

However, healthcare practitioners who focus on natural remedies tend to be more conservative when it comes to flu shots, even in the case of children. Frisco naturopaths Justin Pollack and Kimberly Nearpass and Breckenridge acupuncturist and herbalist Lynne Drakos only recommend flu shots for people who are exposed to a large amount of virus - such as someone in a nursing home - or people who have a weakened immune system because of cancer, AIDS or other diseases.

Should you give your kid a shot?

"With kids, it depends on the environment they're in," Nearpass said. "If they're not in daycare and exposed to the crud 40 hours a week, and if they're breastfed and have a well-rounded diet, then there's not as much of a reason to get vaccinated because they're at less risk for exposure and they're already developing their immune system rapidly."

But Dr. Laurie Schwanitz, a pediatrician at Dillon's High Country Health Care, recommends everyone 6 months and older receive a flu shot, unless they have a severe egg allergy. She strongly recommends it for children who were born prematurely or who have heart disease, asthma or immune deficiencies, though parents should consult with their doctor first.

Studies have shown that healthy children under the age of 2 are at increased risk for flu-related hospitalization compared with older, healthy children. Because of this increased risk, the CDC recommends that all children 6 to 23 months of age get vaccinated.

"Older people who have been exposed to influenza already are more likely to mount an immune response. The vaccination helps promote an immune response in children who haven't been exposed as much," Schwanitz said.

Even so, Nearpass says acquiring regular viruses is an important way to develop the immune system.

"If you deprive kids of that natural exposure, it may inhibit the natural development of their immune system," she said. "The vaccine is rapidly injected into the bloodstream, so it's not going through the normal channels of the respiratory system - the respiratory tissue and saliva - so you're bypassing other important defense layers."

Some parents worry about mercury levels in vaccinations; most vaccines contain thimerosal. A 0.5 ml dose of a vaccine such as Fluvirin, Flushield and Fluzone contains 25 microgram of mercury, far beyond the FDA's limit of 1 microgram per gram allowed in food, according to Pollack and Medscape.com., a website geared toward physicians

Mercury in vaccines is mainly a potential concern for infants and young children, said Lola Scott Russell, senior press officer of the CDC. Mercury preservative-free vaccines, in other words vaccines that are thimerosal-free or contain trace amounts of mercury, are available to a limited extent.

Flu shots for all? The Alternative View point!

Naturopaths and Drakos say flu shots can compromise a body's natural defense system. They advocate the natural approach for people with normal immune systems.

"Your body's defenses won't be as effective if you continue to get vaccinated against the flu," Drakos said.

Holistic health care practitioners advocate the natural approach for people with normal immune systems.

"You can look at the immune system like any other system in the body - it needs a good workout every once in awhile to stay fit," Pollack said. "It's the old 'use it or lose it' philosophy. I try to encourage people to build their immunity naturally with antiviral, homemade soups, herbs and more hydration."

He also suggests exercising and avoiding sugar, which creates an acidic state in the body and depresses the immune system.

Still, the flu shot can be a simple way to help avoid a bout with the flu.

"Statistical analysis done on thousands of people have shown that 80 percent of people vaccinated won't get the flu and 99 percent will have a milder case," Dr. Chris Ebert-Santos said during the 2002-2003 epidemic. "Kids and people older than 50 are more susceptible to complications like pneumonia and dehydration from the flu."

If you get a shot

The vaccinations take at least two weeks to become effective in adults and six weeks in children. Some people who have never had a flu shot may experience short-lasting flu-like symptoms. Flu shots, however, cannot cause the flu, because they don't contain live viruses. Occasionally they cause symptoms that mimic the flu, according to Medscape.com.

Many doctors encourage older people and those with compromised immune systems to get flu shots, as the sixth leading cause of death in the United States is infection of the lungs caused by bacteria and complications of the flu, and 80 percent of people who die from the flu are more than 60 years old, according to the Colorado State University Cooperative Extension, an organization that provides unbiased, research-based information.

"Vaccination's greatest impact is reducing the severity of symptoms and the need for hospitalization," said Dr. David Neumann, director of the National Coalition for Adult Immunization.

Do you need a shot?

If you fall into any of the following categories, doctors consider you a high priority for the influenza vaccination. Summit Medical Center will provide flu vaccinations from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at Safeway in Frisco.

- Age 65 or older

- Have a chronic health condition such as heart disease, diabetes, asthma, chronic bronchitis or HIV

- Children age 6-23 months old

- Pregnant women

- Residents of long-term care facilities

- Health care professionals, household contacts or out-of-home caregivers of children less than 6 months of age.

Free flu shots for people with neuromuscular diseases

For several decades, the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) has provided free flu shots to people with any of the more than 40 neuromuscular diseases, and this year is no exception.

People who have progressive neuromuscular diseases that damage muscles responsible for lung function make influenza much riskier. It's particularly dangerous for those with muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease) and other neuromuscular diseases.

"Respiratory infections caused by a flu virus can become very dangerous for children and adults with neuromuscular diseases whose respiratory systems may already be weakened," said MDA President and CEO Robert Ross.

MDA provides thousands of free flu shots annually.

For more information, call (800) 572-1717 or visit the MDA web site at
www.mdausa.org.
People tend to diminish severity of the flu

According to a national Zicam flu survey released Monday, 80 percent of doctors consider the flu to be a "very severe" or "extremely sever" illness compared to other typical illnesses, while only 42 percent of the public agreed.

Dehydration is a serious but often overlooked side effect; 57 percent of doctors consider dehydration to be the most dangerous side effect. About 41 percent of people with the flu see a doctor for treatment, according to the survey.

Despite the fact that 92 percent of doctors recommend people get annual flu vaccines, only 43 percent of the public do get a vaccine, saying they don't think it's necessary, according to the survey. Women are more likely to get it than men (half vs. a third). About two-thirds of seniors get flu shots.
Wash your hands

Influenza spreads through respiratory droplets released into the air when someone sneezes or coughs, or in small amounts of fluid left behind on public countertops, handrails and so on.

One of the best defenses involves washing hands frequently to kill viruses picked up by touching contaminated surfaces. A person also should avoid touching his or her eyes, nose and mouth, because that's where viruses enter the body.

Good nutrition and other basic health practices help keep the immune system strong.

And, people who are sick should cover their nose and mouth with a tissue every time they cough or sneeze. (Then, of course, throw the nasty thing away.) If they don't have a tissue, sneezing or coughing into their sleeve prevents respiratory droplets from transferring from hands to public surfaces. Don't share personal items, and wash hands frequently.

"If you do get the flu, it's a good idea to stay home, as the flu is very contagious," said Roberta Smith, who works at the state health department.

NEWSBRIEF - Do medicinal herbs have a future?
Most people around the globe use herbal medicine for their normal health care relying on some 50,000 different medicinal plants to cure their ills and maintain their health. About two thirds of all herbs are harvested from the wild and there are now indications that between 4000 and 10,000 of them are endangered. Two forces are driving the path to extinction; the encroachment of farming and human habitation upon the traditional herb growing areas, and the tremendous demand for herbal products in North America and Europe. Harvesting of wild herbs is often the main source of income for poor people in China and India, and no attempts are being made to replant what is being harvested. One popular remedy, Prunus africana, which is used to prevent prostate enlargement, is headed towards the endangered list due to over-harvesting. Environmentalists urge herb suppliers to ensure that their harvest is sustainable by replanting what they harvest.

NEWSBRIEF - Europe tightens regulation of herbal medicines.
The European Union has passed a law that requires manufacturers of herbal supplements to register their products in the same way that pharmaceutical drugs are now registered. The registration involves extensive safety and efficacy trials. These trials, however, are not required for herbal products that have been in use for at least 30 years, including 15 years in Europe. The new law also forces herbal product manufacturers to report any adverse reactions to the newly created European Committee for Herbal Medicinal Products. The EU has banned kava kava and has severely restricted the sale of ephedra (Ma Huang).

NEWSBRIEF - Curcumin may help cystic fibrosis patients.
Pamela Zeitlin, MD PhD of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine recently reported that curcumin, a component in the curry spice turmeric, could be effective in the treatment of cystic fibrosis. Curcumin has been found to inhibit an important calcium pump (sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca-ATPase) that is intimately involved in the etiology of cystic fibrosis. Phase I trials are now required to determine the safety of long-term supplementation with curcumin at whatever dosage is required to produce a beneficial effect.

Herbal remedy alleviates dementia

TOKYO, JAPAN. There is increasing evidence that cognitive decline and dementia are associated with a deficit of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is essential for the proper transmission of nerve impulses. Acetylcholine is synthesized from choline and acetate with the aid of the enzyme choline acetyltransferase and cofactor A. Once it has done its job acetylcholine is broken down to its constituent parts through the action of the enzyme cholinesterase. A current, not very successful, strategy for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (a prevalent form of dementia) involves the use of cholinesterase inhibitors so as to increase the level of circulating acetylcholine. Another way of increasing acetylcholine levels would clearly be to promote the activity of choline acetyltransferase. Japanese researchers now report that they may have found a way of doing just that using an ancient Chinese herbal remedy.

The traditional Chinese remedy ba wei di huang wan (BDW), also known as eight ingredient pill with Rehmannia, has been used for at least 2000 years in Chinese, Japanese and Korean medicine to treat mental decline and dementia. It has now been subjected to a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial involving 33 patients diagnosed with dementia. The patients were assigned to receive placebo pills or 20 pills (2 grams) of BDW three times a day after meals for 8 weeks. At the end of the trial the patients on BDW became more cheerful and quicker to respond to caregivers, whereas no change was noted in the placebo group. Two clinical measures of dementia state, the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Barthel Index, also showed marked improvement in the BDW group, but no significant change in the placebo group. No adverse effects were noted in the BDW group, but its beneficial effects did disappear 8 weeks after the cessation of treatment. The researchers conclude that BDW is an effective treatment for dementia.

NEWSBRIEF - St. John's wort and cancer drugs
Dutch researchers report that St. John's wort, a popular herbal antidepressant, can markedly reduce the effect of the chemotherapy drug, irinotecan. Their experiment involved 5 cancer patients (2 with lung cancer, 2 with colorectal cancer, and 1 with sarcoma). The patients received 300 mg of St. John's wort 3 times daily for 3 weeks prior to one of their chemotherapy treatments. The researchers found that the blood plasma level of SN-38, the active metabolite of irinotecan, was 42% lower when the patients had previously taken St. John's wort than when they had not. They conclude that patients undergoing chemotherapy should not be taking St. John's wort. Other researchers have observed that it also interferes with the action of the popular cholesterol-lowering drug, simvastatin.

Ginger and turmeric fight cancer

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA. Ginger, turmeric and other members of the Zingiberaceae family of rhizomes have a long history of use in Malaysian traditional medicine. Ginger, for example, is widely used in the treatment of stomach problems, nausea, vomiting, epilepsy, sore throat, cough, bruises, wounds, childbirth, sore eyes, liver complaints, rheumatism, asthma, and many other disorders. Researchers at the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia now report that several members of the Zingiberaceae family effectively block the promotion of cancerous tumors. They tested 11 different species and found that seven of them had strong anti-tumor properties. Their test involved a short term assay of the inhibitory effect of extracts of the rhizomes (roots) on human cancer cells. They found that turmeric (Curcuma domestica) extracts (turmeric root extracted with petroleum ether, chloroform or ethanol) completely inhibited further growth of the cancer cells. Ginger (Zingiber officinale) extracts, especially the chloroform extract, also inhibited further growth, but the concentration of extract was more critical than for the turmeric extracts. The researchers conclude that turmeric, ginger and other Zingiberaceae rhizomes may be useful in preventing the promotion of cancer and that populations with high risks of cancer should be encouraged to include them in their diet. Further work is now underway to isolate the active components in the plants.

Alternative cancer treatments

TAMPA, FLORIDA. The National Institutes of Health has been funding several studies into the use of alternative and complementary cancer therapies. It is estimated that between 85 and 90 per cent of all cancer patients being treated at major centers now use some form of alternative therapy in combination with conventional treatment. Electroacupuncture has been found highly effective in reducing nausea and vomiting during chemotherapy. Extracts from the maitake mushroom show promise in the treatment of gastrointestinal, breast, lung and ovarian cancers, but large-scale clinical trials are still needed. PC-SPES, a mixture of eight Chinese herbs, is now widely used to treat prostate cancer. Dr. Abraham Mittelman, MD of the Westchester Medical Center reported at a recent meeting of the American Cancer Society that PC- SPES has been found to significantly lower prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels, reduce bone metastasis and lymph node swelling, and markedly alleviate pain. Dr. Mittelman says that several clinical trials of PC- SPECS are underway, but that the herbal mixture is already available for use and can be purchased over the Internet (www.pc-spes.com). He recommends that a physician monitors the treatment as phlebitis and blood clots in the lungs have occurred in a few patients taking PC-SPES. Dr. David Golde, MD at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Institute also reported at the Cancer Society meeting that while vitamin-C may generally be beneficial to cancer patients high doses can counteract the effects of radiation and chemotherapy.

NEWSBRIEF - Herbal remedies for Alzheimer's disease.
The Greek physician Hippocrates used wormwood to treat memory loss. In Shakespeare's time the herbs sage and lemon balm were recommended for the same purpose. Medical researchers are now revisiting these ancient remedies as a possible treatment for Alzheimer's disease. It is well-established that Alzheimer's patients have lower levels of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in their brains and that this deficiency is associated with memory loss and other cognitive problems. Now Dr. Elaine Perry and her colleagues at the University of Newcastle report that lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), pineapple sage (Salvia elegans), and wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) are effective in blocking the reuptake of acetylcholine in the brain and thereby increasing its concentration. A clinical trial is underway at the University to test the effectiveness of lemon balm and sage in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The herbs are being administered in the form of aromatherapy as the active components have been found to be quite volatile.

Chinese medicine alleviates irritable bowel syndrome

CAMPBELLTOWN, AUSTRALIA. It is estimated that 10-20 per cent of the population of the United States and Australia suffers from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This chronic or recurrent condition is characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, and constipation or diarrhea. Traditional Chinese herbal remedies are routinely used in China to treat the condition, but so far have not been generally accepted by conventional Western medicine. This may now change as medical researchers at the University of Sydney have just released a report showing that Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) is indeed effective in the treatment of IBS. Their year-long, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involved 116 patients with IBS diagnosed by gastroenterologists. The patients were randomized into three groups. The first group of 38 patients received individualized CHM (prescribed by Chinese herbalists), the second group of 43 patients received a standard CHM for IBS (supplied by Mei Yu Imports, Sydney, Australia), and the third group of 35 patients received a placebo. All participants took five capsules three times daily during the 16-week treatment period. At the end of the treatment there was a significant improvement among the patients who had received CHM. According to evaluations carried out by gastroenterologists 59 per cent of the patients in the standard CHM group had markedly improved their condition as compared to 40 per cent in the individualized CHM group and 19 per cent in the placebo group. Patients receiving CHM also reported that the treatment had resulted in the IBS causing less interference in their lives. The patients were re-evaluated 14 weeks after the end of the treatment. At this time, only the patients who had received individualized CHM still showed significant improvement. The researchers conclude that Chinese herbal medicines can be effective in the management of irritable bowel syndrome.
