Herbs That Act As Natural Antibiotics and Boost the Immune System

What did people use before antibiotics? There are centuries of history before antibiotics. People used herbs as medicine. Many of our medicines come from herbs today. In many countries of the world, herbs are still used as the main medicine.  Herbs work if used properly and if you take the correct herb for the problem.

There is an alternative to antibiotics that have been proven by research to work on flu, virus, and cold germs when antibiotics will not.

There are several all natural herbs that work as natural antibiotics.

It is up to you to learn about these natural therapies for your own health. These herbs should be an important part in your medicine cabinet. These herbs are extremely useful for dealing with almost any kind of infection or sickness. Most of them are quite inexpensive, and the pill forms can be stored for a year or more at room temperature. These natural herbs come in the form of essential oils as well and in spray form for children.

Garlic -

Garlic is one of the herbs used throughout ancient history and is an important today as in ancient times. Garlic is mentioned in the Bible and the Talmud. Hippocrates, Galen, Pliny the Elder, and Dioscorides. All these ancient sources mention the use of garlic for many conditions, including parasites, respiratory problems, poor digestion, and low energy.

Its use in China was first mentioned in A.D. 510.

It should be noted that when different cultures used it for the same illnesses and health problems, that this is a good indication of its effective usage. If an herb did not work, ancient peoples would have discontinued its use and tried other herbs. Trial and error over time was their clinical study method. The herb working on a various ailment over generations of use proved that it was indeed effective. This ancient medicine usage was passed on through each generation through the medicine man or tribal healer.

In 1858, Louis Pasteur observed garlic's antibacterial activity, and Garlic was successfully used as an antiseptic to prevent gangrene during World War I and World War II.  It was later replaced by modern antibiotics that we know now cause as many problems as they solve.

Antibiotics do not help with viral infections but herbs do work.

Garlic is one of the most powerful of the antibiotic herbs. Garlic should always be one of the herbs in  your arsenal for fighting colds or flu.

Garlic can be purchased in gelcap or liquid form for easy medicinal use, and fresh raw garlic can be used interchangeably as well. Garlic contains a natural compound known as Allicin, which is more powerful than standard Penicillin.

Garlic caps can be broken open and rubbed into the foot of a child when they are too young to take it other ways. Within a short time of massaging the oil into the bottom of the foot, you will know it was absorbed. My daughter used to chew the garlic caps when she was sick.

Garlic is extremely effective when fighting infections both internally and out. It can be used when taken orally for fighting bacterial infections, throat infections, ear infections, sinus infections, kidney infections, bladder infections and so on. If taking raw garlic internally, be aware that some people get a stomach irritation from taking it in that form. It should be noted that in Europe that Garlic is eaten like an apple by many.

Garlic can also be used on the outside of your body, as an external topical application. This works wonderfully for killing fungus infections such as athlete's foot, vaginal yeast infections, and oral thrush. It is also effective as a treatment against staphylococcus and E. coli bacteria.

Garlic Properties help the body in many areas.

This popular herb lowers cholesterol and blood sugar which helps prevent heart attack and stroke.

It may also reduce risk of blood clots and tumors.

It is useful in treating atherosclerosis, and high cholesterol.

Garlic may interact with warfarin, antiplatelets, saquinavir, antihypertensives, calcium channel blockers, and hypoglycemic drugs, as well as other medications.

Goldenseal

Historical Usage:

The benefits of Goldenseal come from the Goldenseal plant with the scientific name Hydrastis canadenisis, that is found in North America.

Goldenseal, with its thick yellow rootstock, is also known as goldenroot. The roots of this herb were formerly used as medicine by the American Indians of the Northeast who called it Yellow Root.

They used this herb as an eyewash, as a treatment for skin wounds, and for such ailments as sore throat and digestive complaints.

In the early 19th century, it was an American, Samuel Thomson, founder of Thomsonian herbal medicine, who changed the Indian name for this herb to Goldenseal Root, when its popular use was as an antiseptic.

Later, after the Civil War, goldenseal root was being used externally to relieve a variety of conditions such as wounds and boils, eczema, and used internally as a treatment for colds, tonsillitis, digestive and other ailments.

It was also given as a tonic when convalescing from any major illness. The benefits of Goldenseal caused it to become a popular folk medicine that was used extensively as an astringent and antiseptic to treat chapped lips, canker sores, and many other external problems.

Goldenseal Usage Today:

Goldenseal is a very powerful natural antibiotic herb. It should be one of the herbs kept in your medicine cabinet during the cold and flu season. Goldenseal is most often used internally for throat, sinus, and ear infections. It's also excellent for any other infections including kidney, bladder and yeast.

It is extremely bitter so the powder form is taken more often. The extract form put into grape or cranberry juice is very effective and is easier to get down. Even in juice, you will not be able to get most children to take it. It is still bitter. This is the form I take it in now because I seem to feel the effects more quickly than with the capsules.

Goldenseal is a Native American medicinal plant introduced to early settlers by Cherokee Indians. It is also called as ox-eye daisy, golden daisy, maudlinwort, moon daisy, eye balm, yellow root, orange root, eye-root, eye root and ground raspberry. Goldenseal can be found in moist forest soils and damp meadows. This plant is so bitter that it has almost no natural predators.

Goldenseal was found to have berberine. Berberine is a plant alkaloid with a long history of medicinal use in both Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine.

Berberine extracts and decoctions have demonstrated significant
antimicrobial activity against a variety of organisms including bacteria,
viruses, fungi, protozoans, helminths, and chlamydia.

Currently, the predominant clinical uses of berberine include bacterial diarrhea, intestinal parasite infections, and ocular trachoma infections.

Unlike garlic, putting goldenseal on a yeast or fungus infection externally doesn't normally kill the infection. This herb is best taken internally for best results in this context.

Goldenseal is extremely effective when used in salves to help prevent infections of scraps, burns and wounds.

Goldenseal is a natural source of Insulin, so diabetics and hypoglycemics need to take care in using it.

The extract form is the best form for quick absorption and in throat infections.

Why Goldenseal is so Expensive?

Goldenseal must be grown under certain soil and climatic conditions. It takes 3 to 4 years of growth before it is mature enough for harvesting.  If it is taken before that, it may not contain the medicinal properties that make it such a healing herb.

Adulteration of the product is a huge problem

Because it is rather expensive, be a careful shopper when buying this herb. You need to make sure that you are actually buying goldenseal and not an adulterated version containing bloodroot. Bloodroot is used by unethical herb companies to substitute for the expensive Goldenseal. Bloodroot which is cheaper but similar in color and chemical footprint can cause dizziness, gastrointestinal burning, vomiting, diarrhea, and intense thirst.

Buy goldenseal from a good, reputable health food distributor. If you find a very cheap goldenseal product, you may be buying bloodroot rather than goldenseal.

Echinacea -

IT HAS been used for centuries by native American Indians to treat cold symptoms.

Echinacea is often called Purple Coneflower. The prominent cone-shaped center of each daisy-like flower gave the plant its common name. Many gardeners now drop the "purple" and refer to the flowers simply as Coneflowers because the colors available now are varied.

Hardiness Zones: Echinacea is very hardy and versatile growing well in zones 3-8. Some varieties specified below do well even in the humid summers of zones 9 and 10.
Bloom Time & Color: Echinacea blooms all summer and flowers are traditionally purple. See specific varieties below for information about new cultivars with different colors.

This is another excellent antibiotic herb which is particularly useful for glandular infections and problems. Echinacea is most often used for ear aches, strep throat and lymph gland problems. This herb is also known for helping to prevent colds and flu symptoms from becoming as severe, and lessening the length of suffering time during cold and flu season. The extract form again is often absorbed more quickly by the body.

Echinacea also an antiseptic herb so it can be used in tea form as a sterilizing wash when needed.

Olive Leaf

Olives are native to Asia Minor and Syria, but are cultivated in Mediterranean countries and also Chile, Peru and South Australia. Olive leaf was first used medicinally in Ancient Egypt and was a symbol of heavenly power.

It was also used to mummify pharaohs. More recent knowledge of the olive leaf's medicinal properties dates back to the early 1800s when pulverised leaves were used in a drink to lower fevers. A few decades later, green olive leaves were used in tea as a treatment for malaria.

Modern health professionals first started using Olive Leaf extract in 1995 when it first became available and although a long-term perspective is not yet possible, initial results are very positive. It is emerging as a very promising and unique herb with multiple applications. It shows considerable therapeutic action against many common conditions.

Q. What does Olive Leaf do?
Olive leaf works at the cellular level to measurably strengthen the body's immune response. The oleuropein in olive leaf is a natural wide-spectrum antibiotic, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal. Unlike synthetic antibiotics, it destroys only the bad bacteria and protects the good.

Medical research shows that when olive leaf is taken orally, it searches out and "inactivates" bacteria. It does this by dissolving the outer lining of the infectious germs and then penetrates the infected cells, thus inhibiting the replication of the bacteria. Olive leaf is a cold and flu buster that delivers effective inhibition and prevention of infection by a wide range pathological microbes, including viruses, bacteria, retrovirus, fungi, yeasts and molds.

Q. Does it contain Antioxidants?
When the human body converts oxygen into energy, free radicals are formed as natural by-products of this process, the overproduction of which cause damage to the body. Studies show that the olive leaf contains some of the most powerful antioxidants known. Antioxidants “scavenge” the free radicals in our bodies so that they don't promote too much oxidation, which can harm the walls and structure of cells, damage the genetic material inside a cell, and cause many serious diseases.

Studies show that the olive leaf contains some of the most powerful antioxidants known, 12 proven Antioxidants!. Antioxidants keep the free radicals in our bodies in check so that they don't promote too much oxidation, which can harm the walls and structure of cells, damage the genetic material inside a cell, and cause many serious diseases. Olive Leaf does not cure diseases, it is however a cold blooded killer of most pathogens. Once the pathogens have been stunned or killed off, the immune system can rebuild itself and cure the disease or get rid of the symptoms.

Q. How does Olive leaf affect Free Radicals?
Free Radicals are bad. They can leave the body vulnerable to advanced aging, cardiovascular problems and degenerative diseases. Free Radicals can be caused by many factors: sun exposure, pollution, stress, poor diet, alcohol and smoke. The high antioxidant qualities (12 proven Antioxidants) of olive leaf have been shown to "scavenge" Free Radicals even more than Vitamin C, Green Tea, Grape Seed Extract.

Q. What is olive leaf good for?
Researches have discovered that olive leaf is particularly beneficial, not only for patients suffering from specific conditions but also the everyday individual looking to increase energy, boost their immune system and lower cholesterol.

There are many antioxidants available in olive leaf,
the most active identified so for include:

Oleuropein,

Hydroxytyrosol &

Tyrosol

Oleuropein

The key to olive leaf is a phytochemical compound called Oleuropein from the leaves of Mission and Manzanillo olive trees. Oleuropein is the major phenolic constituent of the olive leaf (Olea europaea) and it is also present in olive oil and fruit.  It has a powerful anti-bacterial and anti-viral effects. It has proven to be useful in cases of yeast and fungal infections, herpes, chronic fatigue, allergies, psoriasis and many other pathogens. Since it works like a broad-spectrum antibiotic, it is useful against colds, flu, and upper respiratory and sinus infections. In addition, it has been shown to lower blood sugar, normalize arrhythmias, inhibit oxidation of LDL (the bad cholesterol), and relax arterial walls, thereby helping to lower blood pressure. Other benefits are that it boosts energy and eases pain. Several compounds from olive leaves, oleuropein among them, have shown a variety of biological activities as an anti-microbial antioxidant.

Hydroxytyrosol
Hydroxytyrosol is believed to be one of the most powerful antioxidants. Its oxygen radical absorbance capacity is 40,000 umolTE/g, which is ten times higher than green tea. The antioxidant polyphenol is known for it's activity in preventing or reducing the deleterious effects of oxygen-derived free radicals associated with numerous inflammatory and stress-related human and animal diseases. It is also effective at inhibiting LDL oxidation associated with atherosclerosis.

Tyrosol
Tyrosol is a phenolic antioxidant. As an antioxidant, tyrosol can protect cells against injury due to oxidation. It's good bioavailability indicate that it may have an important overall effect. This effect may contribute significantly to the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet.

Resveratrol
Olive Leaf may be beneficial because of its oleuropein. Like the polyphenolic component of red wine, resveratrol, oleuropein imparts some important antioxidant benefits to the user including reduction of LDL oxidation. In fact, an argument can be made that oleuropein and resveratrol are high on the list of beneficial components of the highly touted Mediterranean Diet and account in large part for the reduced incidence of heart disease in those who habitually partake in the Diet.

Q. Why the Mediterranean diet?
Olive leaf is a diet staple in many Mediterranean cultures that enjoy a low incidence of viruses, cancers and heart conditions.   Many people's diets are completely absent of olive leaf creating an environment for viruses, bad bacteria's, yeasts, tumors and heart conditions to take hold.   Fighting these invaders takes energy leaving the host (you) tired and susceptible to other pathogens.   Olive leaf stuns invaders and unleashes the immune system to create a balanced body.   When used preventatively many conditions never take hold or symptoms are reduced and shortened.

Q. Is Olive Leaf good for the Heart?
Like the polyphenolic component of red wine, resveratrol, oleuropein imparts some important antioxidant benefits that may help prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol and support healthy heart function. Olive Leaf causes bad cholesterol to slip off platelets in blood vessels, preventing it from sticking to them and causing health coronary artery clogging. The anti-inflammatory, circulation and vasco-dilating properties of olive leaf relaxes arteries and helps reduce hypertension, lower high blood pressure and stop arrhythmia.

Q. Is it okay to take olive leaf extract supplement every day?
Yes olive leaf is safe to take daily. As with all herbal botanical consistency is critical for success, olive leaf is no different. Consistent delivery with breaks is a common practice. By taking a couple of days off each week and a week off each month you give your system time to assimilate the herb. Our bodies can only assimilate so much olive leaf each serving so try to spread out delivery over 2-3 servings per day if possible. It is also common to change the delivery method i.e. one day capsules, one day tea, one day extract, some powder and so on. The point is stay with the supplement without overdoing it.   The same points go for our olive leaf extract soap as well.   Be consistent but take breaks to push your skin to new levels of health. There is a Detox effect with olive leaf know as the "Herxheimer reaction”.

Olive leaf can be combined with other herbs/teas/supplements to create flavorful, healthful blends. Many of our customers find varying the delivery method (tea 1-3 days/week, capsules 1-3 days/week, extract one day and powder 1-2 days per week) of olive leaf is a good way to keep it in the diet. Our bodies are constantly metabolizing our intake so remember consistency is the best bet for any dietary supplement.

Q. How can Olive Leaf boost the immune system?
Your immune system is your coat of armor protecting your from many diseases and infections. When the immune system is working properly you do not suffer very long from cold, flu, and hundreds of other diseases .
Indications of a weakened immune system:
- Allergies - Digestive problems – Fatigue - Joint – Poor appetite
– Congestion - Respiratory problems – Rashes – Insomnia - Muscle weakness

Unlike antibiotics ole leaf and Olive Leaf does not build up immune system resistance.

A strong immune system will recover from a pathogen invasion, and most of the time you will not be aware of the battle that took place within your body. However, if your immune system is not functioning at its peak efficacy, you may be sick for extended period of time. Once the immune system is over-burdened with some type of pathogen, (virus, fungi, yeast, bacteria, parasites) disease takes a foothold and sometimes it takes months and even years to manifest itself. In the meantime, the pathogens are in your body draining strength from the immune system. Olive Leaf does not cure any disease. It is, however a cold blooded killer of most pathogens. Once the pathogens have been killed off, the immune system can rebuild itself and "cure" the "disease", and get rid of the symptoms that have plagued you.

Q. What can Olive Leaf do to combat antibiotic-resistant germs?
Many medical researchers are becoming increasingly concerned about the emergence of "super" germs that have developed a resistance to antibiotic drugs.

Olive leaf is increasingly used in Europe as a replacement for synthetic antibiotics. In the USA, olive leaf is being used by a growing number of medical practitioners to combat bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeasts and more. To combat this unseen enemy, medical scientists have created ever-stronger antibiotics. But these organisms have brought new meaning to the word "mutant." They mutate faster than science can create new antibiotics. Each new generation seems more aggressive in its invasion and less responsive to antibiotics.

To add to the dilemma, the immune system has undergone its own "mutation" process, failing to respond to older, redundant antibiotics and quickly becoming "immune" to the effects of newer ones. The immune system actually becomes weakened over extended use of antibiotics, making it more susceptible to the invasion of pathological organisms. In short, a paradox has been created. Stronger organisms require stronger antibiotics, which create stronger organisms. Fight back with olive leaf.

Mother Natures anti microbial acts like an antibiotic & detoxifier
Olive leaf and extract (OLE) is an antimicrobial herbal botanical that has the power to control many troublesome conditions that antibiotics are often used to treat.   The human body does not build up a resistance to OLE as happens with antibiotic use and abuse.   Additionally the use of antibiotics in chicken, pork and beef has reduced their effectiveness in humans.   Because of antibiotic's decreasing effectiveness health experts predict that common bacterial infections will one day pose serious health problems. Olive leaf extract appears to work at many different levels in the body. As a result we often hear reports from patients that a variety of symptoms begin improving.

Q. Are Olive Leaf's Flavonoids beneficial?
Flavonoids are most commonly known for their antioxidant activity. However, it is now known that the health benefits they provide against cancer and heart disease are the result of other mechanisms. Flavonoids are also commonly referred to as bioflavonoids in the media – the terms are equivalent and interchangeable, for flavonoids are biological in origin. Since the late 1800's scientists and pharmaceutical companies have documented the botanicals pathogen killing, cardiovascular and energy-giving properties. Emerging scientific evidence has shown that the flavonoids from the polyphenol category (olive leaf), have antioxidant powers greater than those of vitamins C, E, Green Tea and beta-carotene. There are several hundred manufacturers of olive leaf but only Olivus specializes in olive leaf based products exclusively.

Q What does Olive Leaf tea taste like?
Olivus olive leaf tea has a unique taste.   A light steeping delivers a satisfying mellow flavor.   Longer steeping or brewing in a tea press creates a stronger, slightly bitter infusion than can be mellowed with a slice of fresh lemon, stevia, soy, milk, sugar and other herbal flavorings. Olivus olive leaf also blends well with Green and other teas and herbs. Olive leaf can also be delivered into your diet powdered, in capsules, liquid extract and applied to the skin topically.

Q. Are there any side effects to using Olive Leaf?
It is generally agreed that olive leaf does not produce adverse side effects. Please consult your physician if you are taking any prescription medications.

Some people may experience what is known as Herxheimers Reaction, which may give the feeling the symptoms are temporarily getting worse. This most likely is a sign the olive leaf is working! This is due to a detoxification reaction to the olive leaf killing a large number of harmful germs quickly. If this should happen, decrease the dosage by half for three to four days and drink as as much water as possible.

Kelp -

This herb is not commonly thought of as an antibiotic, but it acts as one in your body by stimulating your thyroid to produce more iodine. Iodine kills bad bacteria that causes sickness inside your body.

Kelp is quite useful against strep throat however, when used in tea form. Since this herb is high in natural iodine itself, drinking it in tea form will coat the throat, allowing the iodine to kill the strep bacteria.
