Clove Bud
Eugenia caryophyllata

Cloves has been cultivated for at least 2,000 years. They were an important part of the spice trade and were highly valued for their medicinal properties. The essential oil is steam distilled from the flower buds; the part used for cooking and produces the familiar sharp, spicy, fruity scent.

Why we put cloves in Ham shanks?

"In addition to providing flavor, cloves are a powerful food preservative," says Ara H. DerMarderosian, Ph.D., professor of pharmacognosy and medicinal chemistry at the Philadelphia college of Pharmacy and Science. "You put cloves in ham and it lasts several days longer in the refrigerator."

This herb keeps food fresh because the main active component of Cloves is eugenol, which has long been known to help kill bacteria and viruses, says Gary Elmer, Ph.D., associate professor of medicinal chemistry at the University of Washington School of Pharmacy in Seattle. By killing bacteria, eugenol helps keep meat fresh-and prevents stomach upset, traveler' diarrhea and wound infections.

It has been used in the dental industry for years to deaden pain. According to a study at the University of Iowa, compounds in clove oil have shown "strong activity." It contains antimicrobial and antiviral compounds.

Clove is a warming, stimulating oil with pain relieving and antiseptic properties. It has an ability to soothe and numb the pain of a toothache and also numbs the pain of arthritis, rheumatism, and sore muscles when well diluted in a carrier oil and rubbed on the painful area.

Using Clove as a room spray helps repel insects but also imparts a sense of warmth and helps to lift despondent feelings.

PROPERTIES: Antiseptic, antispasmodic, digestive stimulant, sedative, warming.

BLENDS WELL WITH: Orange, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Sandalwood, Lavender, Ylang Ylang, Bergamot.

For a household deodorizer: Using a glass atomizer, combine 3 drops each of Bergamot and Clove in 2 oz. water for a room spray that kills germs and keeps insects at bay. Shake well before each use.

For a festive room fragrance: Use six drops Clove in the diffuser to create a warm and pleasant atmosphere that is welcoming to family and friends.

For the relief of a toothache: Using a cold compress, dilute 1 drop Clove Oil in warm water. Immerse a cloth in the mixture and place gently against the painful tooth. Medical attention is highly recommended in the case of an abscess.

For a disinfectant mouthwash: When diluted in water, a single drop of Clove oil helps to disinfect the mouth and leave breath fresh. Do not swollow mouthwash.

PRECAUTIONS:

Use Clove in moderation and always dilute well with concentrations of no more than 2% to prevent skin irritation. If you have sensitive skin, conduct a patch test before use.

Clove Oil:

For external use only. Not for use during pregnancy or on children under 2 years of age. Do not use near eyes or mucous membranes

People should avoid clove if they have a known allergy to clove, eugenol or balsam of Peru. Signs of allergy may include rash, itching or shortness of breath. Anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) has occurred.

Some people may experience difficulty breathing after using clove or smoking clove cigarettes. Individuals who smoke clove cigarettes have an increased risk of tooth decay. Use of clove may cause both liver and kidney damage and may disrupt metabolic balances in the body. Clove may lower blood sugar levels.

Caution is advised if you take prescription drugs to control your blood sugar levels. In theory, clove may also increase the risk of bleeding. If you have diabetes or use anticoagulants (blood thinners) or antiplatelet drugs and are considering using clove, discuss this with your health care provider. You may need to stop using clove before some surgeries.

Clove may increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulants (blood thinners) or antiplatelet drugs. Examples include warfarin (Coumadin), heparin and clopidogrel (Plavix). Some pain relievers may also increase the risk of bleeding if used with clove. Examples include aspirin, ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) and naproxen (Naprosyn, Aleve, Anaprox).

Patients taking oral drugs for diabetes or using insulin should be monitored closely by their health care provider while using clove. Dosing adjustments may be necessary. Based on studies in animals, clove may increase the ability of acetaminophen (Tylenol) to reduce fever. Clove may also reduce the ability of the body to sense pain and therefore may increase the effects of pain-relieving drugs that are applied topically as creams.

Consult your doctor, practitioner, and/or pharmacist for any health problem and before using any supplements or before making any changes in prescribed medications.
